Project Spotlight: Solda Pools Ltd. (2015)

By Jason Cramp

wwwMNP-SP-LARSON-037The concept for this project in Halton Hills, Ont., was to create oversized features spread out amongst a large backyard on an estate property. The intent of this backyard retreat was  to create an entertainment hub with various areas that would accommodate a substantial number of family, friends, and business associates.
In bringing this concept to life, the focal point of the project is a 7.3- x 14.6-m (24- x 48-ft) freeform gunite pool, custom-built by Solda Pools Ltd., in Brampton, Ont. One of the project’s most prominent features is a natural-stone waterfall overhanging the pool’s 2.7-m (9-ft) deep end. Here, a steady stream of water trickles down the rock face into the pool.

Opposite the waterfall is an over-sized (2.7-m [9-ft] diameter) custom-gunite spa. At night, these features remain inviting thanks to strategically placed lighting in the pool, spa, and waterfall.

Both the pool and spa were built to coincide with the size of the adjacent backyard enclosure, which was designed by Solda Pools and built by a private contractor. This 80-m2 (861-sf) building is equipped with various amenities, including a fully loaded outdoor kitchen and dining room, heated bathroom, equipment storage, and a huge, covered outdoor entertainment centre complete with a television and wood-burning fireplace.

The use of flagstone to finish the expansive pool deck, which includes various areas for lounging and entertaining, make this recreational family retreat capable of accommodating large gatherings quite easily.

For those who want to escape the excitement of the pool area, a narrow flagstone pathway—off of the pool deck—leads to an inviting garden- and rock-surrounded nook, complete with ample seating and a firepit.
