A $3 million donation from an unnamed source has rekindled talk of a new pool for Nova Scotia’s Region of Queens Municipality (RQM).
According to a report by the Toronto Star, members of the Queens Community Aquatic Society (QCAS) made a presentation at the RQM council meeting in March, asking the region to come on board and render its support in having a new pool built in light of the private donation offer.
RQM mayor Darlene Norman said the society seems to be pushing for an answer, according to the Toronto Star’s report, because the members fear the offer will be revoked if the council does not provide prompt support for a new pool.
“We can’t give answers right away, and, in my opinion, if someone wishes to provide that money for a pool then they will not pressure us into making an immediate decision,” Norman told the Toronto Star.
The municipality’s plan is to have a new pool built; however, not immediately. According to the report, $2.5 million was put in the capital budget last year for a new pool under long-term borrowing, but the municipality never used these funds. There are a number of projects already in progress in the region and new pool is back in the capital budget for next year.
