An investigation into the premature closure of the Canada Games Pool (CGP) in New Westminster, B.C., has determined the immediate cause of the pool leak. A report presented to the city council identified the settling of sediments beneath the pool resulted in the leak.

According to a report by the New Westminster Record, the findings of this investigation will be presented at a workshop on October 30, shedding light on the closure of the facility two years ago, when decommissioning the pool was thought to be ideal given the exorbitant costs of rectifying a discovered leak in the main pool tank, following the flooding of the facility’s mechanical room after heavy rainfall.

The analysis presented to the city stated, “The CGP tank failure was caused by stress differentials resulting from sediment settlement under the pool.” To ascertain the cause of the tank failure, the city engaged a geotechnical engineer, who, after a thorough assessment, concluded that the foundational soils beneath the pool settled.

The news report further states that originally, the CGP was scheduled for closure and decommissioning in August 2023 as part of the təməsew̓txʷ Aquatic and Community Centre (TACC) project to be built next to it; however, it closed unexpectedly in November 2021.
