Mould closes YMCA-YWCA pool in Ottawa

The YMCA-YWCA swimming pool in downtown Ottawa has been closed due to mould problems.

After being closed for three months in 2010 for renovation purposes, the YMCA-YWCA swimming pool in downtown Ottawa has been closed again, this time due to paint and mould issues.

According to a CTV report, the facility is currently undergoing a $15-million renovation, which included the swimming pool; however, the ceiling was finished using the wrong paint, which led to mould problems.

“It has a big impact on our operation, shutting the pool for a four-week period,” Tosha Rhodenizwer, a YMCA-YWCA spokesperson told CTV.

To fix the problem, the mould has to be removed and the ceiling re-painted. Repairs are estimated at $68,000, with most of the cost said to cover the use of scaffolding.

Even with this current problem, the YMCA-YWCA still plans to have all facility renovations complete by the fall, without increasing overall costs. It has not been determined, however, who will be responsible for the cost of removing the mould from the swimming pool.
