The National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) and its board of directors have awarded $20,000 in scholarships and fellowships to 15 students for the 2011-12 academic year.
The NSPF’s scholarship committee approved $16,000 in scholarships to 14 students pursuing higher education in a variety of subject areas. Two students, Krishna Kansagra (Columbia University) and Katelyn Kohout (University of Wisconsin), received $2,000 scholarships. Chase Anderson (University of Notre Dame), Dorothy Cooper (University of Vermont), Brittney Morgan (Huntington University), Sarah Demty (University of Massachusetts), Lauren Hoff (Nova Southeastern College), Charles Hugo and Nancy Hugo (University of Northern Iowa), Stephen Maloney (Pennsylvania State University), Ashley Maynard (Texas A & M University), Alexandra Pesso (High Point University), Sarah Scheuer (University of Georgia) and Hayden Taylor (Brigham Young University) received $1,000 scholarships.
Jodi Jensen, MA, public administration, who is pursuing her PhD in educational management at Hampton University, received a $4,000 fellowship award. This award was established to encourage and support graduate students and post-doctoral fellows who are performing risk reduction or health benefit research related to aquatic activities and/or venues.
Both award programs, now entering their seventh year, have been funded annually. The board increased the number of awards and the total funded for this period in response to the continued soft U.S. economy, recognizing more students are in need of financial assistance.
Scholarship applicants must submit professional information and recommendations, and are required to write a research essay with at least three scientific references. This year, applicants were asked to address swimming pool water conditions and contaminants that are likely to result in eye and/or skin irritation, allergic response or infection. Each applicant was required to include guidance for pool management or swimmers on how to prevent these negative effects.
