A recent episode of the ABC television show, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, featured an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant aquatic play pad in the backyard, which was supplied by Waterplay Solutions Corp., in Kelowna, B.C.
The episode focused on the Rucker family, whose lives were changed when their little girl Anaiah was struck by a car while trying to save her sister. As a result, show star Ty Pennington and his team tore down their home and built a new one, complete with the wheelchair-accessible aquatic play pad.
Having collaborated on a previous episode in 2005, Waterplay, a designer and manufacturer of aquatic recreational equipment, was thrilled to participate again. For this project, they supplied a flower-embellished hula post and multiple ground sprays, which allowed the show’s designers to create an aquatic play pad that would suit Anaiah and her family.
“Having a full line of ADA-approved products and knowing that our collaboration with the show in 2005 was so successful, we were more than happy to contribute—especially given the family’s profound story,” said Lisa Neilson, Waterplay’s director of customer support and communications. “This show is not only deeply moving, but it is also full of creativity and fun, illustrating that with just a couple of components, an inspiring backyard can be created that promotes physical activity and inclusive play.”
