New pool and spa safety code now available

The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC), the first comprehensive code to upgrade pool and spa safety, is now available in print and digital format.

The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code™ (ISPSC™), the first comprehensive code to upgrade pool and spa safety and meet the requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act (VGBA), is now available in print and digital format.

Published by the International Code Council (ICC), the ISPSC combines the relevant provisions of the full set of ICC codes, (including the International Residential Code [IRC], International Building Code [IBC], International Plumbing Code [IPC] and International Mechanical Code [IMC]) as well as Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) standards, to serve as a consolidated document to establish minimum safety requirements for public and residential pools, spas and hot tubs.

“Through our collaboration with the ICC, the ISPSC has expanded APSP’s standards objective to protect consumers through one code across the country,” said Bill Weber, APSP president and CEO. “Knowing what to expect makes it more efficient for manufacturers and pool contractors to install pools, spas and hot tubs.”

According to the ICC, the new code will also allow code enforcement officials, health officials, designers and builders to more effectively ensure pools and spas are built safely. Code uniformity will also result in more consistent contractor training and certification, and will be more cost-effective.

The ISPSC was finalized through the ICC’s governmental consensus process and was developed with input from industry experts and associations, including the APSP, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and National Sanitation Foundation (NSF). Representatives of the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada (PHTCC) also provided the ICC with recommended amendments during the draft document review process.
