Swim club looks at in-depth renovation options
Two of the three renovation options for the Clarington Fitness Centre in Bowmanville, Ont., would see a new teaching pool built for young children and families, which would not affect the depth of the current swimming pool.

In an attempt to update the Clarington Fitness Centre in Bowmanville, Ont., municipal staff presented three different options at a public meeting as part of the facility’s $2.5 million renovation plans.

Two of the three options would see a new teaching pool built for young children and families, which would not affect the depth of the facility’s current swimming pool.

According to a report by DurhamRegion.com, a small group of dedicated swim club members are opposed to any changes that would lower the water level the pool. The local swim team also wants to see the facility updated, but without losing the deep rectangular pool, which the group says is one of the best pools for swim competitions east of Toronto.

However, community services staff feel the pool would be used more if there was a shallower swimming area for families with young children. Therefore, the new teaching pool and family change room will provide space for preschool lessons and intrigue families with young children to come to the facility.

According to Joe Caruana, the community services director, the possibility of a movable pool floor is also being researched. Once all renovation options have been looked at—taking the aging building into consideration—a report will be presented to council in October.
