Splash pad installation costs increase in Ottawa

Splash pad installation costs increase in Ottawa
The cost to build splash pads in Ottawa have increased by 300 per cent, causing new park construction to become postponed.

The cost to install a splash pad in the city of Ottawa has increased by 300 per cent as a result of new specifications for water drainage.

According to OttawaCommunityNews.com the new mechanical requirements have slowed down the installation of at least one city park and councillors are investigating the reasons.

Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley told OttawaCommunityNews.com the cost increase, which has seen construction estimates jump from $100,000 to $400,000,  is based on city staff advice, which calls for new splash pads to be equipped with dual drainage systems. The specifications stipulate splash pad water should drain into the sanitary sewer system for treatment during the summer and into the city’s storm sewer during the offseason.

According to the report, these specifications were brought to Hubley’s attention over the winter when he entertained the idea of adding water play features to parks.

As a result, new park construction has been postponed at Crownridge Drive and Hope Side Road, which were scheduled to be built this year.
