Deserted waterpark in Manitoba causes safety concern

Plans are in place to discuss the demolition of the Wet ‘n Wild waterpark in Manitoba, which has been closed for a decade.

Safety concerns over the abandoned remains of Manitoba’s Wet ‘n Wild waterpark, which has been closed for more than 10 years, has the city’s mayor motioning for it to be dismantled.

According to a CBC News report, the waterpark, located near the community of Lockport, was a popular family attraction in the ’80s, but it has since become a hazardous eyesore as the waterslides have fallen into disrepair, prompting concern. Fencing surrounding the property is also broken in various areas and, therefore, fails to deter people from gaining access to the park.

George Pike, mayor of the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, is worried about what could happen should anyone try to gain access to the park and get on the slides in their current condition.

“There’s steel involved and there are areas that are broken and missing… so there is a problem with it structurally,” Pike told CBC News. “But for an engineer to come in and study it for safety… we haven’t got to that point yet.”

The municipality is meeting with the owner—a numbered company based in British Columbia—in March to discuss the idea of demolition.
