Alka Pool Construction Ltd., a Burnaby, British Columbia pool designer/builder, was the recipient of the Master Pools Guild’s 2014 Grand International Award, a designation given to one pool project per year at the association’s annual awards ceremony.
Alka Pool’s project comprises an infinity-edge pool that juts out from a cliff, providing the homeowner astounding views of the valley and surrounding mountains at every angle.

“A portion of the pool is suspended 12 m (40 ft) in the air, a technical feat which created a stunning effect, gaining us a gold award for technical achievement from the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada (PHTCC) as well as a gold award from the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP),” says Raffaele Sovernigo, the company’s COO.
Master Pools Guild is an international swimming pool association and awards the Grand International Award based on the highest points overall, ‘Best In Show.’ Gaining membership in the Master Pools Guild is difficult and by election only. A builder also has to remain active and participate yearly to stay a member. Alka Pool, which also won ‘Outstanding Geometric Pool,’ along with five other awards, has been a member since 1978.
“We are so incredibly privileged to have worked on this project. Competition for this award is fierce among (Master Pools) Guild members, the best builders in the world, so winning the Grand International is a great honour for our team,” adds Carla Sovernigo, the company’s president/CFO.
