Standard for Portable Electric Spa Energy receives updates for testing

The Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA) has announced new evaluation procedures for spas.

The updates that were made to the American National Standard Institute’s (ANSI’s) ANSI/The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP)/International Code Council- (ICC-) 14 2014 Standard for Portable Electric Spa Energy Efficiency provide guidelines for testing factory-built residential moveable electric spas. It also defines a method to qualify a test facility for the purpose of examining to the requirements of the standard.

“Improvements to the standard are a key component of the PHTA-14 Standard Writing Committee’s (SWC’s) overall commitment to advancing and streamlining processes,” said SWC’s chair, Angelo Pugliese. “While we were not able to have the California Energy Commission accept this template in its entirety, we were able to have a major portion of it approved. Manufacturers can use it as a roadmap to demonstrate their commitment to sustainable and green products.”

Changes to the standard include:

• A clear definition of combination spas to improve outlining test procedures.
• New test methods for exercise spas that can maintain spa-like temperatures. Others will be tested with their own protocols.
• Appendix B is now normative to clarify that these are the portions of ISO/IEC 17025 that are relevant to ANSI/APSP/ICC-14.
• An updated definition and tests for inflatable spas.

“The writing committee worked countless hours on the initial writing of APSP-14,” said International Hot Tub Association’s (IHTA’s) chair, Cindi Magray. “The work that has been done on the update shows our commitment to harmonizing standards nationally and internationally.”
