A family with the ultimate stay-at-home backyard

This young family near Stouffville, Ont., weary of fighting weekend traffic, sold their cottage in Muskoka and created this backyard retreat to adorn their home and gently rolling 10-acre property. The focal point is a 5.5- x 14-m (18- x 46-ft) dry-gunite pool that is equipped with almost every feature and convenience imaginable.

The pool and entertainment complex is located along one side of the home. A large sunroom, which occupies the full width of the home, provides a perfect place to take in all the action in air-conditioned comfort.

The pool, which has a light-grey Armour Quartz interior and is surrounded by Eramosa bullnose coping, has a unique configuration with walk-in access at both ends and the deep section located in the middle. One end features full-width steps, while the other has a 2.4- x 5.5-m (8- x 18-ft) tanning shelf; both provide safe access to the adjoining shallow sections.

The tanning shelf provides the homeowner with the perfect place to relax and dangle their toes in the water. Its shallow depth also makes it perfect for supervised water play with toddlers. The bottom is surfaced in grey tile not only to match the pool’s interior, but to also add practicality for reduced water levels during winter.

An entertaining highlight is the waterslide which is accessed via flagstone steps and ledgerock walls built into the hillside and surrounded by dense plantings to look like they’ve always been there. Sliders drop safely into the pool at a notched landing area separate from the rest of the deep section.

The backyard is a mecca for entertaining and family recreation with a massive deck in sand-blasted Eramosa flagstone set on concrete. The matching ledgerock knee-wall rises to the perfect height for extra seating.

A large cabana, built to complement the home’s architecture, features a dining area, barbecue kitchen, change room, washroom, and laundry room. One of its ultimate luxury features is a semi-private outdoor shower which has a shoulder height wall positioned along one side.

The cabana’s covered dining area provides welcome shelter from the elements, while the gas fireplace adds warmth on cool evenings. Convenient roll-down shutters make closing at the end of the season an easy task.

Visitors to this beautiful backyard are welcomed with a breathtaking lounge area plus an array of chaise lounges with shade umbrellas. Outside the pool area, the safety of small children and pets is ensured by a custom wrought-iron fence which circles the perimeter.
