The purpose of this backyard design was to entertain family and friends and create an outdoor retreat that was comfortable to host a variety of guests—from kids to adults.
The overall vision was to enhance the homeowner’s backyard by building a stylistic natural-looking cabana and upgrading their 5.5- x 11-m (18- x 36-ft) vinyl humpback kidney pool by adding some modern water features, a large patio, and strategically placed landscape lighting.
With the pre-existing location of the pool, the 1.8-m (6-ft) sheer descent waterfall and the spill-over spa located strategically to allow for easy access to the cabana from the rear entrance of the home as well as to provide enough room for the homeowner and their guests to move comfortably around the pool. To co-ordinate these additional features both were surrounded in Owen Sound Tiger-stripe ledgerock.
The sheer descent waterfall is housed in a newly constructed retaining wall located along the pool’s deep end. This hardscape structure also created a raised garden pocket where various plants and shrubs were installed and accented by up-lighting, which further fulfilled the homeowner’s vision for their outdoor living space.
The transformation did not stop here. An old interlock patio was upgraded with a large pool surround finished with a unique paver that offers a distinctive look thanks to its irregular contours and surfaces which produce a mosaic-like effect. The pool coping was also enhanced with a dark brown to black sandstone which not only matches the patio, but also elevates the overall appearance.
Finally, the addition of the cabana was the icing on the cake, as it created an inviting outdoor living space where the homeowner can host guests outside of their home but still in a comfortable setting. The large spruce trees behind the cabana inspired the natural look and use of board and batten cedar shakes for the roof and the cedar siding. To remain consistent with the natural modern concept, Owen Sound Tiger-stripe ledgerock was used to construct the cabana’s pillars and half-walls. Outfitted with square flagstone flooring and granite counter tops in the bar/kitchen area which wrap around one side, the cabana also includes a full bathroom/change room, natural-gas fireplace, and a big-screen TV. An infrared patio heater in the outdoor living area allows the homeowner to use the cabana year-round.
