Alberta government approves NSPF pool operator course

The Alberta government has approved the National Swimming Pool Foundation® (NSPF®) to offer pool operator education under the Alberta Pool Standards, 2006 for the Swimming Pool, Wading Pool and Water Spray Park Regulation.Alberta Health Services issued formal recognition to the NSPF as an organization that can offer the Certified Pool/Spa Operator® (CPO®) Certification course and provide training materials to educate pool/spa operators in the province. The training materials will include instructional videos, handouts such as the Chemical Adjustment and Saturation Index worksheets, course evaluation, and PowerPoint slides. The NSPF’s Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook will also be used.
“We are pleased the Alberta government has identified the benefits of having operators trained by qualified instructors using a standardized program that follows the guidelines established by the ministry,” says the NSPF’s international business development manager, Silvia Uribe. “We see this as a balanced situation; we know that if a facility is maintained and operated by trained people knowledgeable in pool operation, we’ll see less infractions in aquatic installations.”
Since 1985, swimming pool regulations in Alberta have required general knowledge for pool operators, and many have taken one of the courses available in the province. In 2012, the ministry introduced new pool education framework with outlined learning objectives and administrative requirements that would allow operators across the province to gain basic knowledge in pool operation and better understand their role in minimizing health and safety risks.
As the framework was being developed, Alberta Health Services trained its own environmental public health staff as NSPF instructors to provide the CPO certification program training. Currently, Alberta Environmental Public Health has a team of 18 NSPF instructors who are authorized to teach the CPO certification course.
