Aquatic facilities benefit from Canada 150 Infrastructure Program

The Kitsilano Pool in Vancouver will receive $500,000 for structural and mechanical improvements as part of the Government of Canada’s Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program (CIP 150).

The funding, which was announced during the 9^th Annual KidSport Vancouver Swim-a-thon held at the pool, will be used to replace the existing pool membrane, cantilevered gutters, gutter joints, and pool deck control joints. A new electrical circuit will also be installed to accommodate electrical pumps that are necessary to replenish pool seawater.

“Facilities like the Kitsilano Pool allow families, friends, neighbours, and visitors to come together in the spirit of leisure and exercise. It’s a chance to help lift financial barriers that prevent kids from playing organized sport,” said Joyce Murray, member of parliament for Vancouver Quadra, on behalf of the Honourable Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development and minister responsible for Western Economic Diversification Canada. “Funding through the Government of Canada will ensure this local outdoor pool continues to benefit the health and well-being of all Vancouverites for years to come.”

Michael Wiebe, chair, Vancouver Park Board, said the pool’s rehabilitation project will deliver a cleaner, greener, and better saltwater swimming experience at the iconic seaside pool.

“When completed, the project will result in a significant reduction in greenhouse gases and in the potable water currently needed to maintain the pool level,” said Wiebe.

Another benefactor of CIP 150 is the Stanstead Recreational Association in Quebec, which has been granted $56,000 in financial assistance for the purchase and installation of a children’s splash pad at the Beebe Memorial Park. This contribution will also allow the organization to restore and improve the park’s playground and other connected installations, such as a locker room and urban furniture. The children of the community’s summer camp will most notably use the new equipment.

The Town of Stanstead contributed $38,000 for the completion of this project while the Memphémagog MRC invested $25,000. The Stanstead Recreational Association received the support of several private partners and members of the community as well. The total value of the project is $139,297.

“The Stanstead Recreational Association is proud of this momentum of generosity, collaboration from different partners, and the efforts by all to bring this project, which we have been working on since 2009, to fruition,” said the association’s president, André-Jean Bédard.

The city of Lévis, Que., which recently unveiled the final design of a new multi-purpose aquatic centre, also received a $9-million boost in joint funding from the governments of Canada and Quebec, with $4 million provided by Ottawa’s Building Canada Fund (Major Infrastructure Component), and $5 million through the Programme de soutien aux installations sportives et récréatives—phase II. The total federal-provincial-municipal investment is more than $28.5 million.

The aquatic centre will include a 25- x 25-m pool with 10 swim lanes, a recreational pool, multi-purpose rooms, a fitness facility, dance studios, and a community hall. Once completed the new centre will help the city meet growing community needs and attract major sporting events to the region.
