The eighth annual World Aquatic Health Conference (WAHC) drew a crowd of 410 aquatic industry professionals, an increase of 30 per cent over the previous year.
The 2011 World Aquatic Health™ Conference (WAHC™) and Aquatic Physical Therapy Summit in Seattle, Wash., was a success, say organizers, as attendance was up by 30 per cent over the previous year.
The conference theme was ‘Practical Science’ and a variety of topics reflecting this subject were discussed, including drowning and injury prevention, facility management, health benefits of swimming pools and hot tubs, new industry technology and recreational water illness (RWI) prevention. These presentations, along with seminars from previous conferences, are now available on the National Swimming Pool Foundation’s (NSPF’s) website (www.nspf.org)[2], in the online seminar archive.
Eight major meetings and workshops were also held during the conference. According to Michelle Kavanaugh, WAHC organizer, this allowed leaders of organizations like USA Swimming, the Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA), YMCA, American Red Cross and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to meet and visit with attendees.
Once again, the annual WAHC poster session, a program introduced at last year’s conference, allowed attendees to speak with presenters in a more intimate setting. Four poster sessions were presented, including underwater treadmill research; chlorine dioxide inactivation of C. parvum oocysts under recreational water conditions; the collection and analysis of swimming pool inspection data; and Pseudomonas aeruginosa in private spa water.
The 2012 WAHC will be held Oct. 10-12 in Norfolk, Va., at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel. For those interested in presenting a poster or paper at this year’s WAHC it must be submitted by Jan. 31, 2012. Industry members are asked to submit only new scientific findings.
