A summer entrepreneurial program offered through Chatham, Ont.’s Economic Development Services program has allowed an area teenager to operate a successful swim training company out of her family’s backyard pool.
According to a report in the Chatham Daily News, Alyson Bierling, 16, started A.B. Swim School using $1,500 in start-up money, which was provided by the province after her business plan was approved. Bierling used the cash to pay for insurance, obtain a license from the Red Cross, as well as purchase some pool-related accessories. She also promoted her business through her website and Facebook, in addition to distributing flyers throughout her neighbourhood.
“Swimming lessons are definitely a crucial part of any kids’ upbringing, especially here in Chatham where we are surrounded by lakes and beaches, and a lot of people have pools,” Bierling added. “Knowing how to swim is important.”
Rosemarie Montgomery, small business consultant with Chatham-Kent’s Economic Development Services, said those students who complete all of the program requirements receive an additional $1,500, which they can use towards going back to school.
“This is on top of the money they earn running the business,” added Montgomery.
According to Bierling, approximately 40 students have participated in her program since July 1.
