The Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive program is free this spring to all Grade 3 students in Northumberland County thanks to a partnership between YMCA Northumberland and Cameco Fuel Services.

YMCA Northumberland and Cameco Fuel Services in Port Hope, Ont., have once again joined forces to make the Lifesaving Society’s Swim to Survive program available to all Grade 3 students in the county.

The program will be offered this spring and fall to ensure all eligible students have access to the program, which will teach them water safety, swimming techniques, and lifesaving water skills.

“As a community located directly on Lake Ontario and near many other lakes and rivers, it is important for children to feel safe and comfortable around water,” said Eunice Kirkpatrick, executive director of YMCA Northumberland in a report by Northumberland News. “Cameco’s support of this program will have a significant impact on the safety of children in our communities, and we are thrilled to be working in partnership on this initiative.”

Children participating in the program receive in-school Water Smart® lessons and in-pool sessions at local swimming pools to cover the Swim to Survive standard: disorientating entry into the pool, tread/survival float for one minute and a 50 m swim. Children also have the opportunity to practice their skills fully clothed.

“I am proud our company can support this initiative for the second year,” said Cameco’s vice-president, fuel services, Dale Clark. “We feel it is important that all the kids in our community have a chance to develop the skills they need to be safe in and around the water.”

Developed to increase water awareness and decrease the risks of drownings, the Swim to Survive program educates and provides practical learning components for swimming. It also teaches students skills to survive an unexpected fall into water.
