Four national organizations have partnered to launch Getswimming.ca, the online home of the first ever Canada-wide initiative to raise the importance of learning how to swim.Swimming Canada, the Canadian Red Cross, Lifesaving Society Canada, and the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) have come together to create ‘Canada’s Swim Team,’ and by launching this new website, the goal is to ensure every child in Canada is capable of swimming 25 m non-stop before they complete elementary school.
“Swimming Canada is proud to be launching Getswimming.ca with these great organizations,” said Chris Wilson, the marketing and events director for Swimming Canada. “Of course every child that learns to swim is a potential recruit, but much more importantly they become more safe around water, more fit and more confident. We all benefit from the goal of teaching every Canadian child to swim.”
In addition to water safety, the program also recognizes swimming as a great overall exercise for cardiovascular health, flexibility and endurance, and promotes making it a part of an active, healthy lifestyle.
“Swimming is a tremendous way to get exercise,” said Dr. Anna Reid, president of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA). “Initiatives such as Getswimming.ca can also help reverse the rising obesity rates in our children.”
To further promote healthy lifestyles through aquatics, Chicken Farmers of Canada, the new partner of Swimming Canada, is sponsoring a ‘Team Chicken’ page on the ‘Canada’s Swim Team’ website to promote healthy eating alongside active living.
Any Canadian who enjoys swimming or wants to learn can join the group. Membership is free and those who register will receive a regular newsletter in addition to having access to prizes, contests, and event tickets. For more information or to join, visit Getswimming.ca[1].
