Gardeners will have more options when it comes to responsibly disposing of their garden pots and trays as more than 25 Canadian Nursery Landscape Association (CNLA) members are participating in the 2013 National Plastics Recycling Event, which runs June 21 to July 1.
The program was launched in 2010, when six garden centres collected more than 24,040 kg (53,000 lbs) of plastic, and last year, participating garden centres from eight provinces collected more than 40,000 kg (90,000 lbs).
This annual event is growing in popularity as customers often bring an assortment of trays and pots to be recycled; however, some returns may be declined in an effort to control the spread of serious plant pests and disease.
“Participating in the event has helped bring awareness to our customers and staff about the importance of good stewardship,” said Garden Centres Canada chair, Anthony O’Neill, whose company, O’Neill’s Gardenland in Spaniards Bay, Nfld., is participating in the program for the third time.
“By returning their plastics to their local independent garden centre, customers can help to keep that plastic from reaching landfills, and have a net-positive environmental impact.”
This year, a number of recycling partners across the country are participating to allow independent garden retailers to offer recycling opportunities during the event.
