Canadian pool permits up two years straight

The Canadian swimming pool industry saw nationwide building permit registrations increase by 14.2 per cent, from 9,457 permits in 2010 to 10,803 in 2011.

Despite the wet, cool start to the 2011 season, the Canadian swimming pool market experienced its second season of consecutive growth.

During the first six months of 2011, swimming pool building permits were up 22 per cent over the same period in 2010. And, as the weather improved, so too did the number of pools being installed. In fact, between July and December last year, permits were up 54.5 per cent over the previous year.

The weather was a significant factor in prolonging the building season, said Rob Wood, executive director, Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada (PHTCC).

“One of the few redeeming highlights of 2011 had to be the extended building season in the autumn,” he added. “It was the result of a prolonged stretch of mild weather that lasted well into November across much of the country.”

The result of the strong finish to the season saw nationwide pool permit registrations increase by 14.2 per cent, from 9,457 permits in 2010 to 10,803 in 2011. Permit registration in census metropolitan areas (CMAs) also increased by 14.8 per cent, representing a total of 1,053 more registered permits than in 2010.

In terms of the coming season, the improvement in Canada’s consumer confidence index, which has continued to increase since last December, and Environment Canada’s prediction of above normal temperatures for the spring/summer, suggests the pool industry’s success should only continue into 2012.
