The Peter Hemingway Fitness and Leisure Centre, an aquatic facility in Edmonton, was recently named a significant piece of Canadian 20th century architecture.

The City of Edmonton was presented with the Prix du XXe siècle (the 20th century prize), an award created to help bring national attention to the heritage value of modern buildings and raise awareness about nationally significant 20th century architecture in Canada. The award was presented during the 2012 Festival of Architecture conference in St. John’s, N.L., by the Heritage Canada Foundation in partnership with Architecture Canada.

The facility was designed in 1967 by Peter Hemingway, an award-winning Canadian architect, to mark Canada’s centennial. Originally known as Coronation Pool, the facility was renamed in 2005 to commemorate and honour Hemingway’s work in the capital region.

“We’re proud to celebrate Hemingway’s legacy in our city,” said councillor Ben Henderson, who accepted the award on behalf of the city. “I’m pleased this award gives recognition to a generation of buildings we are increasingly at risk of losing because they are too modern for us to fully appreciate their value.”
