[1]To ensure this renovation project maintained its natural look and feel, Hampton Pools & Landscape cut into the side of a mountain to install the concrete pool and spa into the rock. It was a year-long endeavour that included multiple designers, engineers, and sub-trades to create a cohesive space that matched the home’s modern architecture.
Situated in the mountains in Kelowna, B.C., the house overlooks the entire city and lakes below. As a result, every feature (e.g. pool, hot tub, and pool house) was positioned precisely to offer optimum sightlines, while remaining within a constricted construction zone, which was located on an angle to the existing house.
The 5-5- x 11-m (18- x 26-ft) infinity pool has a curved drop wall and includes a swim jet system for the homeowner to train, while the 2-4-m (8-ft) diameter spa was installed in a rock outcrop created to provide privacy from adjoining houses in the neighbourhood. With in-rock candles and a grotto, the spa has river rock pebble tiles that add to the natural feel the client desired. The entire deck comprises cut stone, which matches the interior of the pool house, as well as the outdoor kitchen and bar area flanking the home. By installing flagstone over the edge of the pool’s coping, it not only provided a seamless look, but also helped to disguise the automatic pool cover system.
The pool house provides covered access to the spa in the winter, while the multi-tiered roof provides plenty of space for lounging, along with a conveniently located outdoor shower. The foldaway glass-panel wall provides a private view of the infinity pool and city below. With heated concrete walkways and in-floor light-emitting diode (LED) lights, the entire area can be used year-round.
The indoor/outdoor entertainment area next to the home features a fully equipped kitchen and bar—with wood-fired pizza oven—and a large dining space. These features help to expand the space, as well as tie into the functionality of the home.
A gas firepit and tiki torches, placed throughout the outdoor space, complement the pool, spa, and landscape. Additional features such as a sound system, outdoor heaters for cool nights, and misters for hot sunny days help to complete this homeowner’s hilltop oasis.
