The task at hand for this project by Piscines et Spa Poseidon in Longueuil, Que., was to renovate and rejuvenate a 15-year-old pool by bringing it up to date with the look and quality of today’s new installations.
One of the challenges the company faced when performing the renovation work on the 50,000-L (13,208-gal) 4.3- x 9.75-m (14- x 32-ft) pool was rebuilding the stairs and in-pool bench in the deep end to fit the new liner, as these areas were badly damaged. A sandstone liner pattern (without border) was selected, as it gives the pool a softer look while also helping to achieve the goal of updating the backyard esthetics. A tile border was installed above the liner bead, which further helped to give the pool a more modern, unique look.
Another addition, which is now the main focal point of the outdoor space, is a 4.8- x 0.6- x 0.45-m (16- x 2- x 1.5-ft) custom fire and water feature that flanks the rear pool wall. It includes seven scuppers along the sidewall that allow water to gently flow back into the pool. The sidewall is capped with three 1.3-m (4-ft) long fire elements to create a water-versus-fire effect, which serves to modernize the look of the homeowner’s backyard. To ensure this feature did not look out of place, it was finished using the same tile that was installed along the pool border, which co-ordinates well with the pool deck and the vinyl-liner interior.
The final touch was the addition of a contemporary stainless steel rail, installed on the pool deck and centred along the shallow end wall, to help with ingress and egress from the water.
