The City of Kitchener, as part of its Watersmart campaign, is delivering pool safety information to residential swimming pool owners.

A backyard swimming pool safety initiative is underway in Kitchener, Ont., which will see safety kits hand-delivered to all homeowners who apply, or have applied, for a backyard pool permit in the last three years.

To help prevent local swimming-related tragedies, the city’s aquatics and bylaw enforcement divisions have collaborated to provide area pool owners with information on how they can help keep themselves and their guests safe.

“Water provides us with many wonderful recreation opportunities that create lasting memories but it can also be dangerous,” Jennifer Campbell, the city’s supervisor of aquatics told ExchangeMagazine.com[2]. “We want to avoid any local tragedies by taking proactive action to help keep people safe.”

Examples of the safety tips being shared include:
• If you’re not within arms reach of a child who is a non-swimmer, you’ve gone too far;
• Never leave a swimmer unattended, even for a minute;
• Equipment is not a substitute for adult supervision; and
• Adults are also at risk, especially if swimming alone.

“An important part of our role in bylaw enforcement is to prevent problems before they occur so we’re pleased to participate in this initiative,” the city’s supervisor of enforcement, Gloria MacNeil told the online journal.
