British Columbia Conservative MP John Weston (West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country) officially launched Canada’s inaugural National Health & Fitness Day (NHFD) on June 2, an annual day dedicated to encourage all Canadians to adopt healthier lifestyles.
To create this event, Weston worked with local governments and fitness partners in his riding to agree to offer their sports and recreational facilities for free or at lower costs in addition to showcasing the local opportunities available for sport and fitness activities. To increase participation, Weston encourages local governments across Canada to take part by opening their recreational facilities at reduced rates.
“This day has been a long time coming, but its positive effects could benefit every Canadian for many years,” said Weston, who has also introduced a private member’s bill in the House of Commons that would see the first Saturday in June declared NHFD. “This day is for making a commitment to ourselves for our own well-being, but also for the health and well-being of future generations.”
The idea for NHFD began as a healthy way in which parliamentarians of all parties meet weekly to run, walk or swim together. These activities also led to the inaugural National Life Jacket and Swim Day on the Hill, which were held in May.
