Ajax Community Centre aims for energy efficiency with pool cover installation

The city of Ajax, Ont., has installed a new energy-efficient, motorized pool cover at the Ajax Community Centre (ACC) to bring down heating costs and CO2 emissions. The cover will be used when the pool is closed.

Energy equipment and solutions company Elexicon Group Inc. (EGI) approached  the city in February 2022 about a partnership opportunity that would see motorized pool covers installed at the city’s indoor swimming pool. The installation at ACC will be the first instance of the city testing out the pool cover to gauge its usefulness and impact.

Some of the expected benefits from the pool cover are as follows:

• Bringing down evaporation by 95 per cent, as well as lowering heat loss
• Greatly expanding the life of costly dehumidification equipment, and cutting down the energy expenses related to dehumidification and natural gas expenses in pool heating
• Generate cost savings of about $20,000 per annum on the pool’s operating expenses
• Result in better air quality in the pool deck area and the immediate surroundings, by smothering the smell of chlorine
