An anonymous $2 million donation to the planned recreation centre in Riverview, New Brunswick, will result in the addition of two extra swim lanes to the originally planned 25-m (82-ft), eight-lane pool.

According to CBC News, town councillors unanimously voted in favour of accepting the generous donation during a meeting in early July. In addition to the pool expansion, the town will also look into the possibility of including an outdoor skate park at the centre.

The report continues that the recreation centre’s comprehensive plans include a separate leisure pool, a walking track, a field house with a removable artificial turf, a meeting room, and a fitness centre.

Construction of the recreation centre is anticipated to commence in 2024, subject to final approval by the town council. The estimated cost of the building ranges from $39.1 to $45.9 million, with the town contributing approximately $14 million, and the federal and provincial governments providing around $20 million and $6 million, respectively.

Further, the report says the plan involves decommissioning the Pat Crossman Memorial Aquatic Centre, a six-lane pool, once the new recreation centre is operational. The revised plans, which include the additional swim lanes and the potential outdoor skate park, are set to be presented to the town council in September, followed by a vote on issuing a construction tender.
