A study has found increased pool safety measures are needed in Arizona and Florida as a result of the latest drowning statistics.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently ran a “Pool Safely” campaign, relying on data from a collaboration between aquatic facility consultant, Total Aquatic Programming, and the National Drowning Prevention Alliance (NPDA), to find out the highest reporting of child drowning incidents related to pools and spas in 2022.

In total, 170 drownings occurred in pools and spas in 2022, an 11 per cent decrease from the 2021 statistics. According to the study, there were 23 reported drownings in Arizona, followed by 21 in Florida, and 20 in Texas.

The campaign “Pool Safety” strongly encourages families to refresh their responsibility to water safety in 2023 by following simple tactics such as being present at all times while children are in the water, enlisting kids in swim lessons, and ensuring pools and spas are fitted with appropriate safety drain covers that comply with federal standards.
