The City of New Westminster, B.C., is hosting a farewell event for its Canada Games Pool, which was decommissioned last year due to maintenance issues.
According to a news report from newwestrecord.ca, community members who register for the event are able to take photos and collect souvenirs, such as small rubber ducks, fridge magnets, and postcards to honour the nearly 50-year-old pool.
A “memory walk” will include a photo booth with a pool-themed backdrop, along with a chance to participate in a community art project. There will also be Canada Games Pool craft kits for kids.
The city has been working on plans to build a new aquatic and community centre facility, which will replace Canada Games Pool and Centennial Community Centre. The pool was originally scheduled to be decommissioned in August 2023; however, flooding in the mechanical room and a leak in the main pool tank warranted an early closure last September.
The farewell event will take place on Saturday, Feb. 12, with 15-minute timeslots available between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
