A number of city pools in Montreal have remained open late into the evening in response to the extreme heat and humidity area residents have recently endured.

In response to the extreme heat and humidity wave in Montreal, the city, along with surrounding boroughs and municipalities have extended the hours of play fountains, pools, and wading pools.

Accordingly, a number of pools remained open late into the evening, notwithstanding a situation potentially jeopardizing bather safety (e.g. a problem with water quality and clarity). Participating facilities included: Ahuntsic-Cartierville, Anjou, Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Lachine, Southwest, Outremont, Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles, Rosemont—La-Petite-Patrie, Saint-Laurent, Saint-Léonard, Verdun, Ville-Marie, and Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension. A number of unsupervised water play areas also remained open (some until 10 p.m.).

“The safety of our citizens is our priority and we are working closely with all concerned partners to ensure everyone has obstacle-free access to cooling facilities during this particularly challenging period,” said Mayor Valérie Plante.

Teams are on the ground and closely monitoring the situation in order to adapt their actions according to the needs of the population, said the director of the service de sécurité incendie de Montréal, Bruno Lachance, who is also civil protection co-ordinator for the agglomeration de Montréal.

Following the recommendations of the regional public health authorities of the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud de l’Île-de-Montréal, the civil protection organization for the agglomeration of Montréal recently activated the intervention level of its extreme heat response plan. This plan, which is progressive according to the weather conditions and the effects observed on the health of citizens, provides for the introduction of measures to ensure the well-being and safety of citizens.
