Burnaby City Council has given the green light for the detailed design phase of the Burnaby Lake Recreation Complex (BLRC) project, marking a crucial step toward realizing a new aquatic facility and arena in the B.C. city.

The upgraded facility will feature a 50-m (164-ft) pool with 10 lanes, a diving tower, a combined leisure and six-lane, 25-m (82-ft) pool, a family hot tub, and a National Hockey League (NHL)-size arena for various activities.

This project aims to achieve substantial cost savings when compared to a concept that was discarded earlier this year. The revised plan retains key elements like the 50-m (164-ft) pool and the arena, while reducing costs through measures such as combining the leisure pool and 6-lane pool into one.

Th city will now move on to the detailed design and costing phases. The construction timeline is set to be outlined in a follow-up report to council expected in early spring 2024.
