The Delta Hotel in downtown St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, was recently forced to evacuate its guests due to a chlorine gas leak at the hotel’s pool. Following their removal, six people were taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred when water was added to chlorine, causing the release of a noxious gas. After seeing several people get sick in the pool area, someone at the scene called 911, and the St. John’s Regional Fire Department—along with multiple ambulances, fire trucks, and police cars—rushed to the scene. Once they arrived, the fire department pulled an alarm to evacuate everyone from the hotel.

On the sidewalk outside, some guests were wrapped in towels and blankets, while fire crews worked to allow ventilation into the building to release the poisonous gas.

Those exposed to the gas faced respiratory issues, according to Deputy Chief Paul Chaytor. All individuals who were in the pool, a total of six people, were taken to the hospital for observation. The George Street United Church and the convention centre were used as gathering places for the evacuees and a warming centre, respectively.
