The city of Cornwall, Ont., has earmarked more than $1 million for extensive upgrades and repairs at its Mattice Pool. The goal is to address the deteriorating basins at three of the city’s outdoor pools, Mattice, St. Francis, and Reg Campbell Pools.

According to a report by the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder, the project, scheduled for 2023, involves replacing concrete walls and updating plumbing, with the expectationthese renovations will extend the pool’s lifespan by approximately 20 years.

The report goes on to mention Cornwall’s council granted approval to a local company, Grant-Marion Construction Ltd., at a total bid cost of more than $1.3 million. This figure surpasses the city’s budget allocation for 2023, which was set at $525,000, and the costs will be distributed over the course of 10 years.

Moreover, the report highlights the decision aligns with the goals of the recreation master plan, which prioritizes the improvement and revitalization of outdoor pools and their accompanying facilities. The plan specifically focuses on areas with significant demands, advocating for accessibility improvements and the implementation of modernization initiatives at Mattice, St. Francis, and Reg Campbell Pools. Due to the aging pool basins, extensive repairs have been necessary each spring to prepare them for the summer swim season.
