Alkali-silica reaction (ASR), now known as ‘concrete cancer,’ is a hidden defect in concrete mixture that is making swimming pools unusable.
Per a report by KVUE[2], ASR could be present in thousands of pools built in Central Texas since 2017. This causes the shell of a pool to weaken and crack until it can no longer hold water.
As a result, pool owners are suing manufacturer companies for “negligence” and “breach of contract for defective work.”
Experts say ASR happens when concrete is not mixed correctly, and lacks fly ash. Water makes the concrete expand and crack and, in most cases, the only way to fix it is to demolish an impacted pool and completely rebuild—at double, even triple, the original cost of construction.
ASR can take three to five years to show itself, but in some cases, it can take months, depending on other factors.
