Due to the extensive repairs required for the aging infrastructure of Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools, the City of Toronto has announced the pools will remain closed for the entire 2023 swimming season. The complexity of the repairs has caused an extended construction timeline.
Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools are located at 1867 Lake Shore Blvd. E. The necessary repair work had been ongoing at this facility since weather permitted earlier this spring. While the city planned to re-open the 25-m (82-ft) and 50-m (164-ft) pools this year, they could not due to the extent of the required repairs.
The City of Toronto operates 59 outdoor pools and has been busy preparing for the 2023 summer season, which began as early as Saturday, June 17 for some pools. Out of these 59 outdoor pools, Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools will remain closed and two will be temporarily delayed for opening this season.
The 25-m (82-ft) pool has been fully refurbished, but in consultation with Toronto Public Health, the city decided to keep the entire facility closed for the entire summer season. This is because of the hazards on the site created by the ongoing repair work on the 50-m (164-ft) pool.
Once the necessary work has been successfully completed, the complex will have undergone more than $3.5 million of work to extend the life of this popular facility for another 20 years, including new pool liners in all three tanks and a full deck replacement.
There were no registered swim programs scheduled for the 2023 season at Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools. All permitted programs at this location have been relocated.
For drop-in lane and leisure swimming, residents can visit the Greenwood Park Outdoor Pool (150 Greenwood Ave.), Monarch Park Outdoor Pool (115 Felstead Ave.), and Kiwanis Outdoor Pool (375 Cedarvale Ave.), which are all located within 3.5 km (2.17 mi) from the Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools. Kiwanis Outdoor Pool will stay open for an additional week (until Sunday, September 10), with part-time hours to help residents make the most of the summer season.
The two of the pools facing delays in opening will open according to the following schedule:
Leaside Park Outdoor Pool (5 Leaside Park Dr.) will open for the summer season on Saturday, July 15.
Pine Point Park Outdoor Pool (15 Grierson Rd.) is scheduled to open on Monday, July 3.
