A man in Gatineau, Quebec, suffered significant lung injuries while performing shock treatment on his pool, which resulted in an explosion, and the pool owner being hospitalized.

According to a CBC report, the pool owner said this was a routine task; however, that day he performed the water maintenance differently, deciding to put the shock treatment packet into the water heater, along with eight cups of chlorine, instead of directly in the pool. As he added hot water to the water heater, the situation quickly deteriorated, and the water started boiling in an abnormal fashion. Realizing something was wrong, he decided to flush it out, but as he headed to the backdoor, there was an explosion.

The man’s wife told CBC she urged him to leave the house, as the explosion created poor air quality in the surroundings of the pool, and she called 911 once they were both outside the house. The man was taken to a hospital while fire crews and police arrived to clean and ventilate the premises.

According to the same report, the accident caused deep burns to his lungs and sinuses, and he had to be placed in an induced coma and connected to a respirator. He regained consciousness six days later and was discharged from the hospital after three weeks.

While speaking to the reporter, he urged everyone to take extreme caution when dealing with chemical products. Further, he told the reporter how factors, such as product packaging, instructions, quantities, and chemical strength, can change over time and warned against ignoring written guidelines.
