Regina’s Maple Leaf Pool has plans to improve accessibility for all ages and abilities.
“We heard from area residents that Maple Leaf Pool is a community hub and a gathering place for family and friends to spend the day together,” said the city’s mayor, Michael Fougere. “We believe we have achieved a design that will best serve the community from both an accessibility and a sociability perspective.”
The new L-shaped pool design—favoured by more than 400 citizens who gave their feedback—supports all swimming levels and provides areas for socializing and playing games in the water while maintaining deck and green space around the pool.
Accessibility is a top priority in the development or renewal of city facilities. The plan features a beach- or zero-depth entry, allowing patrons with mobility challenges and young children improved accessibility into the pool.
In addition, the new change room and washroom facility features an accessible lift and table. The overall cost of the project is estimated to be $4.5 million, with updated funding and a financing plan going before council as part of the 2020 budget considerations.
“Thank you to neighbourhood residents for taking the time to provide feedback into the design concept for the new Maple Leaf Pool and summer programming that is being provided for children and youth while the new pool is being constructed,” said Fougere. “The Heritage Neighbourhood Community Association and Thomson Community School deserve special mention for assisting the city in providing opportunities for public engagement and consultation.”
The project now moves to the next phase, which is finalizing the design and preparing the tender documents for construction; fees and timelines will be determined once the construction tender is awarded.
