The Harry Bailey Aquatic Centre in Saskatoon is about to undergo significant renovations to extend the life of its facility by 40 years. As a result, the pool will be closed for 18 to 24 months.
The estimated project cost is $13.4 million, with $10 million coming from the federal government’s Green and Inclusive Community Building program. The funds available for the pool have allowed for the accommodation of greater repairs than originally planned.
Upgrades will include replacing the pool basin and solar panels, and making repairs to the roof, water treatment system, and building’s mechanical system.
The project will also give special attention to accessibility, with the front entrance, changerooms, insulation, and vapour barrier all receiving a major overhaul. The renovations are aimed at making the pool an attractive training centre for athletes, but will also benefit users of all ages.
The city is aware the closure will create inconvenience, and there will be a rush towards other local pools, but it will welcome residents to public swims, aquacise, and swimming lessons wherever there is availability.
