The estimated costs to upgrade Vernon, B.C.’s Lakeview Wading Pool have jumped by $600,000 since 2019.

Upgrades to a popular Vernon, B.C. wading pool are estimated to cost $600,000 more than originally expected.

The Vernon Morning Star[1] reported a staff report to the city’s council provided an update on a potential plan to revamp the Lakeview Wading Pool, which is more than 60 years old.

According to the report, the updated design would include “zero-depth entry, handrails, wide pathways, and large accessible washrooms.” It is envisioned there would also be a heating system installed.

The plan also calls for a new spray park near the pool and the replacement and relocation of washrooms and a mechanical storage room.

The original cost of the project as presented in 2019 was around $2million; however, the latest estimate came in at around $2.6 million.

It was also stated in the report that this was due to the increased cost of earthworks and a more detailed contingency budget in order to apply to the Canada-British Columbia Investing in Canada Infrastructure grant program.

According to staff, if the application is successful, the federal and provincial governments would cover $1.888 million of the costs while the city would fund approximately $686,000.
