Portions of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre (VAC) were closed due to a chunk of concrete falling into a pool and the loosening of Styrofoam acoustic panels during exterior repairs.

According to a report by CityNews Vancouver[2], the City of Vancouver expected ceiling repairs to conclude by the weekend. According to another report by CTV News Vancouver[3], during the week, the pool and the impacted fitness centre returned to full operation.

However, as per the CityNews report, concerns arose for the Canadian Dolphins Swim Club, which is hosting a Swim BC divisional championship on Feb. 23, 2024. The club fears displacement, emphasizing the critical role VAC plays in their 70-year history.

The report also stated that Vancouver assured the competition’s continuity despite safety concerns. While awaiting city decisions, the club president urged provincial support for aquatic facilities, stressing swimming’s significance in Vancouver’s community health and fitness initiatives.

This incident added onto previous issues, including a 2022 awning collapse. While there are plans for a new VAC in 2026, it has a $140 million budget and construction details are still pending.
