The Kitsilano Pool, which suffered damage in April 2023, will reopen for this year’s summer season.

According to a report in the Vancouver Sun, an extensive investigation revealed the damage, including two crushed pipes and faulty expansion joints, were responsible for the significant water loss, leading to the facility’s closure.

Following the discovery of leaks and structural issues last year, the report says concerns were raised about the viability of the pool in the short term.

Over the past eight years, $5 million has been spent on capital works at the pool, which is one of the longest outdoor swimming pools in North America. It opened in 1931 and was replaced with the current design in 1978.

Despite the issues, a report by CityNews Vancouver says the pool will reopen in May, with repairs continuing into the fall 2024. In the report, staff said the pool’s opening is dependent on the weather.
