The National Swimming Pool Foundation’s (NSPF’s) board of directors recently endorsed the first module of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Model Aquatic Health Code (MAHC), which will serve as a guide for updating or implementing standards in the aquatics industry.
‘Operator Training,’ which was issued on April 8, 2011, is the first of 12 modules in the MAHC. The second module on ‘Ventilation/Indoor Air Quality’ was released on April 13, 2011, while another six are in final review and being formatted.
“The release of the first modules that will make up the complete national MAHC is a seminal moment,” said NSPF CEO Thomas M. Lachocki, PhD. “The NSPF endorses the concept and process of the MAHC and urges every health department and every association to adopt the first module, ‘Operator Training,’ without exception.”
According to a recent study by the CDC, there is a poor track record for public health code compliance. Pool inspection data from 15 jurisdictions across the U.S. indicated that 12.1 per cent of inspections resulted in immediate closure due to the seriousness of identified violations.
