The National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) and National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) have jointly launched a new online Certified Pool/Spa Inspector (CPI) training program to help environmental health specialists conduct effective pool and spa inspections.
The interactive, self-paced course features narration, images, video and exercises designed to help environmental health specialists understand:
• operation and maintenance practices that focus on reducing risk;
• the workings of the circulation system and its components;
• procedures to evaluate a facility for Pool & Spa Safety (P&SS) Act compliance;
• the unique hazards of spas and the specific inspection needed to assure safety;
• how to minimize recreational water illnesses (RWIs);
• the ways operation and maintenance records relate to an inspection;
• how aquatic play features have unique hazards and specific inspection needs to assure safety; and
• swimming pool design standards and their impact on public health.
“This course improves efficiency by getting inspectors up the learning curve to understand hazards and ways to minimize risk,” said NSPF CEO Thomas M. Lachocki, PhD. “The beauty of the CPI online training program is that it is cost effective and convenient, since participants can access the program on any computer, eliminating the need to travel. CPI training also helps health departmental trainers’ efficiency by allowing them to focus on specific department procedures rather than on basic risk topics.”
The new course replaces the CPI training DVD introduced by both organizations in 2005 and is available through NSPF’s online training portal, www.eproacademy.org[2]. The cost is $50 US per student and includes a copy of the Certified Pool-Spa Inspector Training Handbook.
