The National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) continues its goal to create one million more swimmers over the course of 10 years, a mission it put forth in 2012.
The Step Into Swim campaign benefits two groups: children that cannot afford to learn the life-saving skill of swimming because of their economic or cultural standing, and children who benefit from Angels of America’s Fallen (AOAF). AOAF is a non-profit organization that supports children of fallen military and first responders.
This year, grants were provided to the following organizations:
The New York State Parks “Learn to Swim” program taught 11,773 children throughout the state. The Fort Worth Drowning Prevention Coalition in Texas taught 363 individuals throughout the summer, 48 whom were adults, throughout the summer. Splash Mid-South provided lessons to 250 underserved youths in the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson and Picnic in Memphis, Tenn.
“When we deliver water into people’s lives, we deliver more life for people,” says Thomas M. Lachocki, Ph.D., NSPF CEO and Pool & Spa Marketing editorial advisory committee member. “People gain more life contentment when they are water competent and all types of water bodies deliver joy and memories. The Step Into Swim campaign is one way we can help spread the love of water and reduce the fear.”
