Nearly one month after the city of Ottawa lifted is temporary moratorium on summer camps taking place at Calypso, the waterpark is now facing a new $1.25 million lawsuit.
According to a report in the Ottawa Citizen, a patron who visited the park in September 2011 alleges in their Aug. 30 statement of claim that they were injured after being thrown off a raft on one of the theme park’s rides called the Steamer. Other reported injuries, which occurred on this ride as well as two waterslides in 2011 and 2012, are what led to the 20 Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA) charges the waterpark received this past July.
The TSSA’s investigation of the waterpark, which opened in 2010 in Limoges, Ont., found various problems, including failure to report serious incidents and inadequate training of staff that were operating the slides.
This recent lawsuit can be added to a long list of claims totaling $3.8 million against Calypso by patrons who allege they were hurt while visiting the waterpark.
The report further states Calypso has not yet filed its statement of defence, and none of the allegations brought forth in the Aug. 30 claim have been proven in court.
Calypso is expected to be back in court on Oct. 3 for the TSSA charges.
