Penticton, B.C., city council has applied for a deadline extension to ensure renovations to its community centre and swimming pool remain eligible for Infrastructure Stimulus funding.

City council in Penticton, B.C., has applied for the Government of Canada’s Infrastructure Stimulus Fund deadline extension to ensure renovations to the city’s community centre and swimming pool remain eligible for funding.

According to a report in the Penticton Western News, the approval of the Oct. 31, 2011 extension, which was offered to infrastructure projects by the federal government last December, is a precautionary measure that will give the city and its construction teams some breathing space. Missing the deadline would disqualify Penticton from receiving portions of the $15.5-million infrastructure stimulus grants.

“Currently, the entire community centre pool project is on track to be completed by March 31,” recreation manager Dave Lieskovsky, told the newspaper. “However, one challenge to the schedule is that the provider of the construction project requires asphalt surfacing.” Asphalt is a seasonal product and the opening dates of the two local asphalt plants are dependent on weather conditions, Lieskovsky added.

“Because the federal government offered us this extension, we thought just in case we have an unfortunate spring and the asphalt plant doesn’t open until April, rather than late March, we will take them up on their offer,” he said.

Should the city’s deadline extension be approved, it will only apply to asphalt and cannot be used on other areas of the project, as the extension announcement was made after much of the construction had already been completed.

When finished, the community centre will include a 10-lane, 25-m (82-ft) square lap pool, leisure pool, several spray features, waterslide, fully accessible whirlpool and sauna and steam room.
