The Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada (PHTCC) recently announced an affiliation agreement with the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) to promote, advance, and advocate the interests of the pool, spa/hot tub industry across North America.

Under the agreement, which was signed during the Canadian Pool & Spa Conference & Expo last week, PHTCC members will become members of the APSP and receive membership benefits. Both organizations will maximize promotional opportunities to strengthen brands and membership opportunities.

“We are delighted with the formalization of our close relationship with the APSP,” said PHTCC executive director, Robert Wood. “In addition to expanding the level of service offered to members, this agreement will help foster efforts to collaborate on policy development, and thereby serve to further advocacy efforts on key issues of mutual interest.

“This is a monumental step forward for the industry in North America.”

The APSP is honoured to be affiliated with the PHTCC, said the U.S. association’s president and CEO, Rich Gottwald.

“Collectively, we are a stronger industry by promoting membership, sharing resources, and working co-operatively to invigorate consumer interest in our industry’s products. Membership in PHTCC goes hand in hand with membership in APSP and we are excited about this opportunity.”

The PHTCC also announced a new education program which allows members to achieve ‘Specialist’ (Level I—Fundamentals) and ‘Expert’ (Level II—Advanced) certification. To achieve ‘Specialist’ certification, members must successfully complete four core courses in addition to three elective courses, which can include authorized courses offered within the certification programs of the APSP, and training programs offered by the Foundation for Pool & Spa Industry Education (FPSIE).

To achieve ‘Expert’ certification, members must successfully complete four core courses in addition to having already completed the core course requirements for ‘Specialist’ certification. Completion of an additional six elective courses is also required, which can include the Certified Pool Operator® course from the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF), authorized courses offered within the certification programs of the APSP, and training programs offered by FPSIE.

Courses listed as part of the ‘Industry Trade Certification Program’ are provided by the PHTCC either in a class environment or via computer-based training on the council’s website. Members seeking ‘Specialist’ certification must complete the program in a maximum of three years. ‘Expert’ certification must be completed in a maximum of five years. Recertification is required every five years.

For more information on the certification program, call the PHTCC at 905-458-7242.
