PHTCC recognizes its first industry expert course graduate

Dave Warren of Total Tech Pools & Leisure, in Oakville, Ont., is the first recipient of the ‘Aquatic Recreation Industry Expert’ (level two) certificate under the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada’s (PHTCC’s) certification program.

Not only did Warren, past-president of the PHTCC, successfully complete all of the necessary core and elective courses to qualify, he was also instrumental in developing the program, including the establishment of curricula and the instruction of some of the course offerings.

Last May, Lynette Purdon of Pool Pros Ltd., in Oak Bluff, Man., was the first to achieve the ‘Aquatic Recreation Industry Specialist’ certificate.

The Industry Trade Certification Program provides opportunities for members to work toward skill designations as industry ‘Specialists’ and ‘Experts’ through successful completion of a range of educational offerings.

Core courses required at the ‘Specialist’ level include: Pool Installation 101, Water Chemistry 101, Pool Operation 101, and Safety in Our Backyards. Three of the following elective courses must also be completed: Hot Tub/Spa Service and Maintenance; Water Discharge Best Management Practices; Automation–Basic Operation and Programming; Spa Pack & Pump Troubleshooting; Certified Pool Operator® (CPO®) course (a National Swimming Pool Foundation® [NSPF®] offering endorsed by the PHTCC); Training in Workplace Hazardous Management Information System (WHMIS) from a provincially authorized provider; Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG) from a provincially authorized provider; a PHTCC chapter course approved by the council’s education committee; or an authorized course offered within the certification programs of the Association of  Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP) or the Foundation for Pool & Spa  Industry Education (FPSIE).

‘Expert’ certification can be attained by completing all of the ‘Specialist’ certification requirements, plus the following core courses: Pool Installation 201, Water Chemistry 201, Hydraulics, Pool & Spa Business Operations (to be developed), and three additional electives from the list above.
